Not quite in the International Ice Swimming Association zone, but just half a degree out. Score on the thermometer was 5.5 degrees C. I know I can do a kilometre at this temperature, so thought I’d see how it went. Coming back on the second 100 yards, I couldn’t believe that I’d only been in the pool for less than two minutes. This was going to be hard.
The first 800 yards dragged on, but it was a good milestone to pass 600 yards – as it’s a one third marker. Lengths 9&10 were the hardest. Hands beginning to disappear at this point. 11&12 went more easily – another marker (2/3 mile) and one kilometre at 1100 yards. Six more – knew if I could do four, I could push for the last two. Sped up a bit (or at least felt like I did) and 13,14,15 & 16 zoomed past. Just two more. 17 was easy, the beginning of 18 not so easy. Perhaps I had relaxed into the end too soon. Regained some composure by the end; and felt I could have done a little more. I was not as cold as I have been in the past.
Now, I wonder if the ISA would let me verify membership in Tooting? To be honest I can’t be bothered with the faffage of meeting membership requirements (3 thermometers, X counters and so on), but I guess I could be persuaded.
Meanwhile the incredible Mrs Ape clocked up 800 yards – the second longest swim of the day. Claire shared a marvellous banana, walnut and Jack Daniels cake; and we forgot to bring the Hemp and Ginger cake. But I have nine slices in the fridge for tomorrow – if I remember.
- Where shall I swim today?
- January joy
- I believe I can fly
