Sunday morning peeps

Down to the lido to swim with Sue Croft, channel aspirant, as she wanted to get a Polar Bear hat. Only to find her coming out of the pool having done it. Assisted by Kathrine, she managed to get her temperature up to a degree below normal in half an hour! Kathrine is doing some research into temperatures before and after swimming in cold water – it was 3.5C today – but her thermometer couldn’t get the after swim temperature, as it was too low.

Meanwhile Mrs Ape baked a wonderful Battenberg cake, sold CWSC raffle tickets (buy them here) and got sponsorship for her efforts to raise money for the Pickering Centre (donate here) – a voluntary run support centre for people with cancer, or recovering from cancer.

Otherwise, it was Sunday business as usual. 33 yard handicap races, cake, coffee, chat and patball.

The body temperature thing is interesting. Does this mean that many of us are getting hypothermia on a regular basis even when we manage to warm up without medical assistance? Is what you call “afterdrop” actually hypothermia? etc etc.

You may be interested for future trips in going to an Ice Hotel. There is a trip currently on Groupon to such places in Transylvania. I don’t know about swimming opportunities but there is a photo of an icy chalet in the middle of a lake which looks very inviting. http://getaways.groupon.co.uk/d-15888932-Transylvania?nlp=&CID=UK_CRM_1_0_0_14&a=2463

    • Peter – on your first point, check my tags and read previous pieces on cold water acclimatisation and effects. For a more considered view check out loneswimmer.com. He’s done more research and writes about it more comprehensively than I do.

On your second point, I thought you were a salesperson for something else, not Groupon!

Brilliant Carl! As you say there is lots of information on your blog to be found by searching.

As for the second point . . . cheeky! Groupon was only where I happened to see an amazing photo of somewhere that looked great for swimming. [ Yes they do pay £6 if you get others to sign up but I wasn’t doing that!] As for the tongue in cheek jibe about being a salesperson of something else, I’ll leave that one to Judas Iscariot.
