Mrs Ape had plans to go to Tooting, run, return and whisk me off to Charlton, once I had completed the damn report. Alas, the South Circular was closed in Catford, probably has overrunning works Forest Hill and is never fun on a work day…so she enjoyed the cuppa I brought her; and once I’d polished off the final draft (dammit, it’s a draft), we did the crossword, moseyed about a bit and headed off to Charlton Lido.
In the changing rooms, I observed two fellows (who had got their before me and left to get in the pool after me) confirm every stereotype about faffaletes that I hold. I later observed one of the pair fiddle with his Garmin TURBO GPS Lap Counter Watch Achievement Monitor for at least five minutes, before he graciously allowed me to lap him several times over two kilometres. I then switched lanes to glide up and down with Mrs Ape for another kilometre or so, before a few lengths of backstroke and some fly kicks. Highly satisfying.
